The Vision 3 Summit is a provocative ‘mega’ networking and education event—for executive-level industry service providers and vendors—designed to deliver the latest intelligence on all aspects of running a graphic communications business.
With an amazing speaker line up addressing a wide array of poignant industry topics, the V3 Summit is on a lot of radar screens out there including other media resources. As a media sponsor for the conference, we are taking a different route to introduce you to some of the major players on a more personal level. I asked for a response to one of these two questions: What inspires you about Print? / When did you get hooked on Print? and also What is your favorite V word (other than Vision), and why?
As they come back I will be sharing them so follow us and @Vision3Summit / #V3summit on Twitter, and watch for new posts here and on our Facebook page. Click on the link to see details on the V3 Summit Sessions. Here is part 2 two… hope you enjoy!

What inspires you about Print?
It’s probably cliché, but I started my career as a visual communicator while studying photography at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). I quickly learned that the reproduction of the image was critical to communicating its content and I caught the printing bug. This included a study design, composition, typography and of all of the print processes, from museum quality dye transfer color printing, letter press, litho, gravure, and digital printing. I still remember spending hours studying the Ansel Adams photography portfolios and browsing the archives of the Melbert B Cary, Jr. Graphic Arts Collection for printing. It’s this love and appreciation for reproduction of great content that has inspired me throughout my career.
What is your favorite V word (other than Vision), and why?
Some of the best photographers in history, such as Ansel Adams and Edward Weston, taught visualization as a approach to evaluate a scene and determine how to capture and reproduce the scene to match their intent. Visualization is a code word for me that reminds me that we manage the graphic arts process to support the intent of designers, photographers, and visual communicators.

When did you get hooked on Print?
Unlike other speakers, I don’t come from the printing industry. I’m a lawyer by background, having been on the bank side of debt restructuring and bankruptcy cases during the circa 1990 credit crunch. At age 29 in the middle of the recession, I left my job at a good law firm to hang a shingle as a consultant. Early clients were from all industries, the common thread was they needed help to restructure debt and survive. Among the early clients were a couple of printing companies, one was referred by a CPA and the other by a client. I didn’t know anything about printing at the time. I took a liking to these two clients and spent a lot of time with them, Along the way, I started learning about the industry. I’ll never forget my first Graph Expo, 1995. I was blown away by the sheer magnitude of the event. The equipment, the smell of ink, the noise…..then realizing that there are so many segments within the broad definition of printing……I was hooked. Within a year, my small consulting firm (3 partners) decided to specialize in printing and graphics, we never looked back. I merged the practice into NAPL in 2004, having spent the past 7 years involved in all kinds of M&A and restructuring as the industry consolidates. But I always remind myself of how amazing this industry is, with so many diverse companies, capabilities, and unique aspects.
What is your favorite V word (other than Vision), and why?
V word? Hmmmmm?? VICTORY!
