Over the past 2 years, news about the economy has been dicey at best, so it doesn’t come as a shock that some of that same uncertainty shows up in the latest HOW salary survey. The average national salary for designers dropped slightly—from $9,753 in 2008 to $48,983 in 2010. Raises and bonuses dipped a bit, too. But since HOW conducts this survey every other year, those numbers may be a little roslier than they appear at first glance.
Our most recent survey wrapped on July 1, with 1,520 designers anonymously sharing details about their paychecks. The previous survey ended in July 2008 and our friends at The Creative Group—a staffing agency for marketing and advertising professionals—tell us that the job situation for creatives didn’t start to get really challenging until October 2008. While many of our survey numbers are down vs. 2008, it’s possible that they could actually show a modest improvement over the last half of 2008 and first half of 2009, a job market many would rather forget.
