An exciting new literary release will soon be appearing on a beer bottle near you.
Buzzards Bay Brewing Co. of Westport has announced that it will be featuring a 12-part serial mystery on bottles of its Just Beer brand India Pale Ale; each case of the brew will contain the complete story of “The Case of the IPA.””It all just came together as a natural representation of who we are as creative people,” said Bill Russell, one of the owners of the family-run brewery.
How did the unusual idea first occur? “I think over beer,” Russell said.
Paull Goodchild, the cellar master for the Russell family’s Westport Rivers winery, has been writing fiction, humor and song lyrics for decades, he said. He pitched the idea of using one of his short stories on Buzzards Bay Brewing packaging years ago, but the timing was just never right.
Then, last fall, the brewery decided to start selling 22-ounce bottles of beer. “The label size was big enough to handle a decent amount of story,” Russell said. So the company’s brewer Harry Smith approached Goodchild, who jumped at the chance to publish a story, albeit in an unusual format. “When this opportunity fell in my lap I jumped at it,” Goodchild said. “The first thing that popped into my mind was the serials of the 20s.”
