Sign Law: Basics & Beyond
With 39,000 jurisdictions in the US that possess the ability to restrict signs and graphics, now is the time to understand how sign codes function within municipalities. David Williamson, an Ohio attorney with a focus on sign law, and partner to SGIA in its Sign Code Partnership, will explain the basics of sign law, addressing both constitutional protection of commercial speech and the rights of cities to restrict the “time, place and manner” of displaying graphics. You will see typical sign codes from the perspective of a professional planner, a member of a zoning commission, and from your (and your customer’s) viewpoint. Special attention will be paid to two topics of current interest: Mobile billboards, and building wraps.
