Data, QR Codes, Social Media and Differentiation: Pat McGrew reports exclusively for PMC from the PODi AppFourum

Picture 1For the ninth year the team at Caslon has invited us all to Las Vegas for the PODi AppForum. It’s an event that draws printers of all varieties and the vendors who support them, especially those who have mastered the art of multi-channel communication featuring print and pixel. This year drew the usual suspects and a lot of new, curious attendees with great questions and great answers to share.

If you aren’t familiar with PODi, check out www.podi.org for details. It’s a membership organization and has what is arguably the best library of well crafted case studies in the industry. Each year the library is enhanced as PODi solicits the industry for its Best Practices Awards. This year saw three categories with winners:

  • Best Practices Winner: Direct Marketing Category
Chick-fil-A and Dukky — “Chick-fil-A Increases Store Traffic”
  • Best Practices Winner: Marketing Resource Center Category
Mercury Marine and Pinpoint-360 — “Mercury Online Marketing Dealer Network Solution”
  • Best Practices Winner: Self-Promotion Category
    Boelte-Hall — “Boelte-Hall Drives Customer Leads”

There were also honorable mentions in each category. It’s a tough job judging these types of applications so the team at PODi calls on some industry luminaries to help out. You may recognize some or all of the names:

• Howie Fenton, Senior Technical Consultant, NAPL.

• Dr. John Leininger, Professor Department of Graphic Communications, Clemson University.

• Cary Sherburne, journalist, author, marketing consultant, and WhatTheyThink Senior Editor.

• Jim Olsen, President, Imagination Ink.

So, beyond awards and some great educational presentations, what is the AppForum all about? The agenda gives a clue. There is a lot of time allotted to networking, and tonight there were a series of dinners hosted in restaurants around the hotel focused on different aspects of the business. There was even a TweetUp for Tweeters (people who use the Twitter Social Media environment).

There are quite a few of us Tweeting the #appforum11 – so if you partake in Twitter, search for our hashtag and it will almost be like you are here with us!
