Who wins the NFC vs QR War? Everyone!

I just read a great post by Tony Vassiliev – Chief Executive Officer at Gauge Mobile Solutions Inc. titled Will NFC Eliminate QR Codes Entirely?  One of the reasons Im sharing it, besides my love for all things multichannel, is that he makes this very simple and clear point:

“…As I mentioned earlier, NFC requires a transmitter chip to be attached to the item you want to communicate with. This chip is small and fairly inexpensive. Using it in permanent fixtures such as Out-of-Home displays is a no brainer. However, what about all the promotional materials with a short life span: newspapers, magazines, business cards and stationary. What about television sets and computer screens. NFC will never take the place of QR codes in these media. The codes have no production cost and they can be published along with the remainder of the content in print and broadcast (not including radio of course).

For any of you still thinking QR codes are a fad, I challenge you to do the following: think of them as hyperlinks or buttons rather than widgets. They are intended to connect real world communication elements with interactive, rich media content. In order for them to be truly effective and gain mass acceptance, they must accomplish the following:

1. Be relevant in their context

2. Provide added value

3. Deliver mobile friendly content”
