World's First Augmented Reality National Newspaper

Taiwanese media group United Daily News has partnered with visual browser Aurasma to create an augmented national daily newspaper in which the images, ads and editorial are interactive.

As with other such augmented reality experiences, users need to point their camera phones towards the newspaper and view the content come to life on the phone’s screen. Static images transform into video reports and stories can be enhanced as the day goes on with the latest story updates.

Aurasma worked with United Daily News to build a dedicated app — Vmagic — which allows readers to view the enhanced multimedia content.

Aurasma uses image and pattern recognition technology to recognise images and objects in the real-world. Users can access additional content such as videos and animations that can be linked to a particular trigger image or object, such as a magazine cover, drinks bottle or building.

Martina King, managing director of Aurasma, said: “For the first time, traditional media such as printed newspapers can deliver the latest interactive digital content and benefit from revenue streams previously the preserve of mobile and online channels.”
